551 is a project to show just how many people support whales and want to see an end to whaling.

The name is based on the fact that, last season the Government of Japan killed 551 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

By adding your photo to the project you will not only be showing your support for whales, you will also be helping us create posters, TV commercials and a Big Book with which to petition the Australian Government to do everything they can to stop the Government of Japan killing more.

Why the Australian Government?

The majority of Australians have always been opposed to whaling.

Now we’ve got a Government committed to using more than just words to stop it.

By creating Project 551 we can illustrate the breadth of support across Australian society for real action.

Everyone you see on these pages, whether plumber, pensioner or performer is a real person who believes the Australian Government will continue to protect whales, including stopping Japan’s unlawful, inhumane and unnecessary whaling program once and for all.

How do I upload my photo?

Who is involved?

Project 551 is an initiative of IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

To date we have worked with a dozen photographers and over 25 well known Australians to create a collection of photos that can now be used to create art show, posters, video and of course the Big Book.

Who is IFAW?

Founded in Canada in 1969, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) has grown to become one of the world’s leading animal welfare organisations, with offices in 16 countries and more than two million supporters.

Our global team of campaigners, legal and political experts and scientists works to reduce the commercial exploitation of wildlife; preserve vital  habitats; protect cats and dogs; and provide emergency relief to animals in crisis.

Since 1990, IFAW has maintained a presence in Australia, with our Asia Pacific office located in Sydney. We work with government, locally based animal welfare groups and the people of this region to improve the well-being of wild and domestic animals.
